What would you do if you suddenly go blind?

Students from Global City Innovative College (GCIC), Philippines came to Singapore on an entrepreneurship learning journey that had them coping with literally losing the sense they rely on the most- sight.

Most of us would not only be debilitated, but completely devastated should we lose our sight. And while we don’t really think about that possibility, it does happen, as it did with one of the guides at Dialogue in the Dark (housed in Ngee Ann Polytechnic). He woke up with extremely blurry vision and over the course of a few days lost his sight altogether. “I can only see shadows and when someone asks me if I can see colours, to me it is just different shades of black.”

The students were surprised with the oppressiveness of the darkness as they walked into a completely dark room, feeling their way into the narrow passages with only their sense of touch to rely on. “At first I thought this was just a student project and we would just stand around for one hour listening and feeling and dreading the slow passing of time. But when we were asked to get on a boat, I suddenly realized that this was something special.”

Students walked away with different realizations about themselves with most feeling more confident about being able to trust their other senses should they lose their sight. Everyone was also deeply impressed with the guides who were blind, one of whom now has a family of her own and even uses the internet. Most everyone also agreed that they lose out on so much, just relying on their eyes instead of all their senses to “see” the world. “I learned to define my world using my other senses instead of my eyes. It made me ‘see’ things so differently.”

Happy 2010 to All!

What will you be doing differently this coming year? As 2010 begins and the resolutions start coming in a fast and furious way, what is the one thing you will definitely do? Some of us at TLE are hoping to become fit enough to join one of the 10 km runs held in Singapore each year. Others hope to read at least 1 “good” book per month and make the effort to meet up with long lost friends, lost only to the hustle and bustle of life.

Whatever you choose to do (hopefully it is a positive one), we wish you only the best since we’ve got a bunch of resolutions that need fulfilling ourselves. Let’s encourage one another this year as we try to be better for ourselves and for others.

And remember always to take time to think and give thanks.

Give me one more test!

As with all successful service learning trips- the giving is never one way. On this trip organized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) & TLE, educators scrambled to put together a learning carnival for maths and science, passing on their skills and knowledge to the rural-based teachers who had been looking for guidance.

Amazingly, the more the teachers worked, the more energized they became. Thoughts of feeling unappreciated, tired, even on the verge of giving up their profession altogether melted away as they saw the local teachers devour every lesson being passed on. “Give me one more test!” was a constant refrain as the rural based teachers wanted to make sure that they got the concept down pat.

Even when Physical Education exercises were passed on, the genuine enthusiasm with which it was received made it almost impossible not to be infected in return. Everyone left with gladdened hearts knowing without a doubt that the day had passed with much good accomplished, not just for that moment, but for every child that will pass through each of those teachers’ classes from now on.

“Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”

- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
